Frequently Asked Questions

How does payroll work in Switzerland?

There are 26 different cantons in Switzerland and the majority of them have different rules and variations of employment. In Geneva, the hourly minimum wage across all industries is 23CHF with a maximum of 50 hours per working week. Any overtime is paid at 12% of the regular pay rate, or given as time in lieu.

What are the general employment rules?

Employees are entitled to sick pay with the level depending on their years of service. Some employers choose to take out a benefits insurance scheme which enables employees to receive 80% of their salary for a period of up to 2 years. Maternity allowance is also given to employees who have contributed to OASI for at least 9 months prior to delivery.

What about dismissing an employee?

Employers are able to terminate a contract of employment without there being an important reason, providing the reason is not discriminatory. The employee can request to be informed of the reason for termination if they wish. It is advisable to provide written communication of the termination in the event of a dispute.
