Frequently Asked Questions

How does payroll work in the United Kingdom?

In the UK, employees are generally salaried and paid on a monthly basis. All pay data is submitted via RTI (Real Time Information) to HMRC monthly, to ensure the local government maintains records on pay data. It is crucial to ensure correct and timely submission of this information, otherwise, penalties and fines can be incurred.

What are the regulations around sick leave?

When an employee is sick for up to seven days, they can self-certify with no need for a doctor’s note. After seven days, a doctor’s note is required for leave to continue. After 4 days of sickness, an employee can be entitled to SSP (Statutory Sick Pay). There are many factors that dictate whether you can remain on SSP and for how long. Your PeoplePay Global dedicated specialist can advise you.

What about dismissing an employee?

Employment rights are very strict in the UK. We suggest speaking to one of our Employment Law Advisors before taking any action, in order to ensure you remain compliant. Employees can be entitled to a substantial sum depending on the type of dismissal.
